In “China Girl” (selected theaters) Abel Ferrara has another ultraviolent winner, a Romeo and Juliet tale set in Lower East Side Manhattan’s cheek-by-jowl Little Italy and Chinatown.Ferrara and writer Nicholas St. John, whose previous pictures are “Driller Killer,” “Ms. 45” and “Fear City,” can create gritty and exciting Manhattan street fables like no one else, and Ferrara has a way of making violence expressive and therefore acceptable as few other directors can. “China Girl,” however, has been trimmed to get an R and frankly there’s one needlessly graphic stabbing murder that might have better ended up on the cutting-room floor. Even so, Ferrara, who also directed the knockout opening episode of TV’s “Crime Story,” is an exploitation picture-maker of extraordinary style and substance.As the credits unroll, we watch the modest, old-timey D’Onofrio’s bakery being replaced by the high gái china-tech Canton Gardens, a sign of Chinatown’s further encroachment into Little Italy. Against this atmosphere of uneasiness a handsome, curly-haired teen-age Italian-American (Richard Panebianco) almost precipitates a race riot by daring to dance with a beautiful Chinese girl (Sari Chang), a recent arrival from Hong Kong. Consigo dormir estupendamente. Poco, claro está, pero reparador. Las camas del hotel son de los colchones más duros que imaginar se pueda, así que tras los baches continuados del día anterior se agradece sobremanera tener una superficie lisa de la que disfrutar. El gái china trabajo en planta se sucede de manera similar al día anterior. Efectivamente, han dedicado toda la noche a resolver la cuestión ingenieril que no había funcionado. Las pruebas salen bien, aunque con los ya consabidos problemas de comunicación. Mi querido compañero de viaje empieza a agotarse de tener que explicarlo todo tres o cuatro veces. A la paciencia agotada se sume un calor ahora casi severo. Pero para la tarde todo parece funcionar bien a falta de unos cálculos finales, un saber mejor utilizar grandes cargas, unas estimaciones de adiciones. En la reunión general, todo parece ir bien, se llega a acuerdos, se enviarán documentos. Además, allí disponen de otro traductor, un colombiano de nombre Hugo, que habla un castellano e inglés estupendos, cosa que a los chinos no debe gustarles tanto, porque dicen que al no ser chino no les entiende a ellos lo que quieren decir. En fin. Falta una reunión mañana sobre logística y materias primas, y esto se puede dar por avanzadísimo. Así que el gran jefe chino decide invitarnos a cenar chino de verdad en un restaurante del hotel. Y después, comenta, tendremos actividades culturales. A mí esto, sinceramente, me produce algún escalofrío. Me imagino que se tratará de un karaoke, dadas las tradiciones del país, o de una bolera, agasajo más habitual de lo imaginable por parte de muchos chinos a sus visitantes occidentales. Ambas cosas ya las había practicado, con gran regocijo por parte de mis anfitriones (quienes no eran capaces de reconocer mi falta de habilidad en tales actividades como una graciosa concesión a su hospitalidad), en visitas anteriores a China. La tercera posibilidad podría ser ‘putas’.
